How to import a Google Keep list into a grocery list app

Copy one note and paste it, or export all of your Keep notes with Google Takeout and upload the files. Checkboxes, quantities and crossed-off items all come across.

.json files onto the Upload tab. Keep's checkboxes, quantities and crossed-off items
all survive the trip.
Google Keep is the other place grocery lists live, and its checkbox lists are genuinely good — tap to tick, checked items slide to the bottom. Two things it does not do: order your list the way the store is laid out, and tell you what the trip will cost. This page covers moving a list across, including the bulk route most people do not know exists.
Method 1 — one note, copy and paste
- Open the note in the Google Keep app or at keep.google.com.
- Tap the ⋮ menu (bottom right on mobile, top right on the web) and choose Copy to clipboard. Keep copies the whole list, checkboxes included.
- Open grocerylist.io and tap Import note.
- Paste and tap "Read the note". You get a preview of every item found, with quantities and estimated prices.
- Add them to your current list or to a brand new one.
Why "Copy to clipboard" and not "Send"? Keep's Send → Copy to Google Docs makes a document you then have to open and copy again. Copy to clipboard puts the plain text straight on your clipboard, which is exactly what the importer wants.
Method 2 — all of your notes at once, via Google Takeout
Takeout is Google's data export tool. It gives you every Keep note as a file, which the importer reads directly — useful if you have years of shopping lists, or if you are moving off Keep entirely.
- Go to takeout.google.com and sign in.
- Click "Deselect all", then scroll down and tick Keep only. Exporting everything Google has on you takes far longer and you do not need it.
- Click Next step, leave the defaults (send a download link by email, .zip) and click Create export. A Keep-only export is usually ready in minutes.
- Download and unzip the archive. Inside
Takeout/Keep/you get one.htmland one.jsonfile per note, named after the note. - Drag the grocery ones onto the Upload tab in the app — several at a time is
fine. The app reads both formats, and reads the
isCheckedflag out of the JSON so ticked items stay ticked.

Keep vs. a dedicated grocery list
Being straight about it: if Keep already works for you, keep using it. The reasons to move a grocery list specifically are narrow but real.

A lot of people end up doing both: capture in Keep whenever something runs out, then paste the note in on the way to the store.
Frequently asked questions
How do I copy a whole list out of Google Keep?
Open the note, tap the ⋮ menu and choose Copy to clipboard. That copies the entire list as plain text, checkboxes included, ready to paste. It is on both the mobile app and keep.google.com.
Can I export all my Google Keep notes at once?
Yes, with Google Takeout. Go to takeout.google.com, click Deselect all, tick Keep only, and create the export. You get a ZIP with one .html and one .json file per note — both of which this app reads directly, several files at a time.
Do checked-off items stay checked?
Yes. Pasted Keep lists arrive with ☐ and ☑ characters, and Takeout JSON carries an isChecked flag; both are respected. A switch in the importer lets you ignore it and start with everything unchecked.
Does Google Keep sort a shopping list by aisle?
No. Keep moves checked items to the bottom of a list, but it has no notion of store sections, so the order stays whatever order you typed. That is the main practical reason people move a grocery list somewhere else.
Can two people edit a Keep list without Google accounts?
No — Keep collaborators must have Google accounts. A shared link from this app can be opened and edited by anyone you send it to, with no account on either side. See sharing a grocery list.
