How to turn an iPhone note into a grocery list

Keep writing your list in the Notes app. Copy it, paste it once, and get quantities, aisle order, a cost estimate and a list you can share — without retyping a single item.
Open the note in the iPhone Notes app, tap and hold the text, choose Select All → Copy, then open grocerylist.io in Safari, tap Import note and paste. Every line becomes an item: bullets and checkboxes get stripped, quantities like "2 lbs of ground beef" are read as quantities, and anything you had already ticked off stays ticked. It takes about fifteen seconds and nothing gets installed.
The Notes app is where an enormous number of grocery lists actually live, and it is genuinely good at capturing them — it is two taps from the lock screen and it syncs across your devices. Where it falls down is the store: no aisle order, no quantities it understands, no running total, and sharing means either handing over a whole Notes folder or screenshotting it. This page is about keeping the part that works — typing into Notes whenever you think of something — and fixing the part that does not.
Step by step
- Open your note. Any format works. A plain list, a list with hyphens, an iPhone checklist with real checkboxes, or a paragraph with commas.
- Select all of the text. Tap and hold anywhere in the note body, let go, and tap Select All in the little menu that appears. Then tap Copy. On a Mac: ⌘+A then ⌘+C.
- Open the app. Go to grocerylist.io in Safari. There is nothing to install; if you use it regularly, tap Share → Add to Home Screen and it behaves like a normal app and works offline.
- Tap "Import note", then paste. Tap and hold the big text box and choose Paste.
- Tap "Read the note". You get a preview: every item the app found, with its quantity, an estimated price and a badge showing whether it matched the catalog.
- Fix anything odd and add it. Edit a name, change a quantity, uncheck what you do not want, then add it to your current list or create a new one.
If your note has real iPhone checkboxes, copying it turns them into the characters ☐ and ☑. The importer reads both — unchecked items arrive as still-to-buy, checked ones arrive already crossed off. You can turn that off with the "keep items that were already crossed off" switch.
What the importer understands
Real notes are messy. These are the patterns it handles, all of which come from how people actually type:

It also ignores dates, "TOTAL: $45.60" lines, dividers and links, and strips the conversational part of a text message, so "hey babe can you grab milk, eggs and paper towels" imports as three items rather than one long one.
Bringing over many notes at once
If you keep a dozen separate grocery notes, copy-pasting each one gets old. Two shortcuts:
- Paste several notes into one box. The importer treats blank lines and headings as separators, so you can paste three notes in a row and sort it out in the preview.
- Use a file. Anything you can get into a
.txt,.md,.csvor.htmlfile can be dropped onto the Upload tab, several files at a time.

Notes is not the problem — it is a good capture tool. The gap is everything that happens after you are standing in the store.
Frequently asked questions
Can I import my iPhone Notes grocery list without installing an app?
Yes. It runs in Safari — copy the note, open grocerylist.io, tap Import note and paste. There is no App Store download and no account. If you want it on your home screen, use Safari's Share button and "Add to Home Screen"; it then works offline too.
Does it keep the checkboxes from my Notes checklist?
Yes. Copying an iPhone checklist turns the boxes into the ☐ and ☑ characters, and the importer reads both — items you had already ticked arrive already crossed off. There is a switch to ignore that if you would rather start fresh.
Will it understand "2 lbs of chicken" or "a dozen eggs"?
Yes. It reads pounds, ounces, gallons, quarts, pints, counts and cases, plus written numbers ("two avocados"), multipliers ("3x yogurt"), containers ("2 cans of black beans") and dozens. Weights are converted sensibly: "2 lbs of ground beef" becomes two 1 lb packages rather than a single mystery item.
Does this work with Apple Reminders too?
Any text you can copy works, and Reminders lets you select and copy items. Reminders does not have a "copy the whole list" command, so for long lists Notes is easier. Voice dictation inside the app is another route: say the items separated by commas.
Is my grocery list uploaded anywhere?
Not unless you choose to share it. Imported lists are stored in your own browser. Pressing Share uploads that one list so the person you send the link to can open it, with no name or account attached; unused shared lists are deleted from the server automatically.
